Skype: free phone calls anywhere in the world - and it's legal

Skype

Time to get on the bus, Gus - VOIP is here and ready for prime time.

Skype's website lets you sign up and start making all the phone calls you want - for free.

That last group of phone bills - I mean, no one gets just one anymore - got you down?

Here's the solution.

Works with Windows, Pocket PC, Linux, and Mac (a miracle!).

What's not to like?

OK, so maybe it's not perfect yet - but are you?

No.

We're all works in progress, so let's give the VOIP crew some slack and get on with it.

The telcos know their days are numbered, and they're rearranging their deck chairs just as fast as they can pack their golden parachutes.

Implosion time aboard the good ship AT&T.

It was fun while it lasted, what?

Joe - I've been using Skype for a while. A couple of observations: Computer to Computer is out of this world in quality, price and convenience. Computer to ordinary phone (or cell) is usually very good. One problem for my son in college is the quality is unacceptable for him to call anyone using a dial-up computer - computer to computer. Skype has to have higher speed than dial-up to work.

One note: Skype has a new phone either out or soon out to connect Skype and your computer to all your wired phones in the house. The only reasone I keep my land line now, is for cheap local calls for my spouse to use. I usually let the thing ring and see who called sometime later with my answering machine. If anyone I care about needs to hear my voice, my cell is on me pretty close to 24/7 - not water-proof yet.

Different topic - I'm eBook reading Ringworld's Children by Larry Niven. Have you ever read any of the Ringworld series? Sometimes tedious, but wrapping my mind about a world which is a ring larger than the orbit of the Earth is challenging.

Have a Turkey, don't be one! Thanks always for your efforts on your blog. - Matt
