See the ivory–billed woodpecker — in New York City
For the next two weeks, through Sunday, May 22, the New York Historical Society is showing John James Audubon's magnificent original watercolor of the "Lord God bird."
"In a sighting hailed as 'miraculous,' a legendary bird thought to be extinct reappears."
Many of Audubon's contemporaries considered his exquisite renderings more alive than the actual creatures he painted.
Central Park West at 77th Street. (212–873–3400)
