Hotel Puerta América in Madrid — What's it like to live in a John Pawson design?

Or Zaha Hadid, Jean Nouvel, Marc Newson, Norman Foster, Christian Liagre, David Chipperfield, Kathryn Findlay, Jason Bruges, Arata Isozaki, Jonnie Bell, Harriet Bourne, Ron Arad, Plasma Studio, Araki, Richard Gluckman, Teresa Sapey, Vittorio & Luchino, Felipe Saes de Gordoa, Javier Mariscal, Fernando Salas or Arnold Chan, for that matter?

A (relatively) cheap thrill can now be yours with a night at this stylish new hotel.

"Ascending the ramp of the Hotel Puerta América, guests pass from the sensory confusion of Madrid into a curved cloister–like space. Light bathes walls and water washes over stone. The reassurances of order, sanctity and material sensuousness are immediate. Here is territory which deals graciously with the rituals of arrivals and departure, but which has a strong sense of place, balancing a desire for theatre with the need to feel comfortable."

The hotel opened last Thursday, June 30 and was said by the Guardian's Dale Fuchs, in a July 1 story, to be "the most eclectic building in a city striving to compete with Barcelona's urban chic."

Each floor of the hotel was done by one or more of the formidable talents noted above.

Even better: the architects and designers were given free rein and a blank check.

I plan to spend one day simply walking down from the top and exploring each floor.

Too bad about the hotel's website, filled with sound and Flash and a total disaster.
