The chandeliers of Tord Boontje

The Dutch designer exploded on the lighting scene in 2001 with his reinvention of the chandelier for Swarovski.
"Called Blossom (below),
it looks like a crystal–encrusted metal branch and comes in three versions, with crystals that are pink, dark blue or pale green. Moss has them, starting at $21,500," wrote Mitchell Owens in his "Room To Improve" feature in the June 30 New York Times.
A bit rich for your blood?
I can see how that could be.
OK, then, how about Boontje's new Come Rain, Come Shine chandelier?
It's "shaped like a hot air balloon and custom–made of black or multicolored hand–crocheted cotton, dappled with delicate silk and cotton flowers," wrote Mitchell.
It comes in two sizes (16"W x 32H or 22"H x 44"H) and can be ordered ($4,100 and $7,100) from Artecnica.
Moss sells the 44–inch version in black for $6,700 and the colored version for $7,100.
Still a bit much of a muchness, huh?
Well, you know I'm not going to let you go away empty–handed: at bookofjoe, everyone's a winner.
With the exception of its namesake. But I digress.
Boontje has created some very artful fixtures for those among us who'd rather not drop four or five figures on a chandelier, no matter how fine.
Try the Midsummer Light (top).
It's made from red and yellow layers of Tyvek paper laser–cut in a lacey pattern that cascades down over a polypropylene cone light diffuser.
18"W x 30"H.
$73.90 here.
Perhaps mademoiselle wishes a broader color palette to choose from?
I thought that might be the case.
Here you go: the Midsummer Light in blue, light green/yellow, light fuchsia/pink or white, each $74.
Here's where it gets to be fun.
Because right about now is when I get really revved up.
Because I know you're wondering if you could possibly own a fixture by Boontje for any less.
Yes.
You can.
Go to the Conran Shop in Manhattan. (407 E. 59th St.; 866-755-9079).
For $48 you can get a Garland Light (below),
"a flexible vine of laser–cut, floral–pattern brass that can be wrapped around a light bulb."
It's also available in silver–plated brass.
I think that's enough.

i LOVE the blossom chandelier, especially the pale green and pink. is it also available in clear? who else sells it, other than Moss in NYC, and is it available directly from the artist? i believe Tord is one of the most important new designers today and i first noticed his "Wednesday Light" that was featured in Elle Decoration. i bought one of the first editions in stainless steel years ago in Clerkenwell. thank you in advance for your cooperation
