What am I?

Well, looks like it turned out to be a recurrent feature, what with this second appearance.
Last Friday's unknown?
A garlic peeler (above and below) from Williams–Sonoma.
$9 here.
militantplatypus got it right and posted the correct answer 69 minutes after the post went up.
Other answers were amusing and you can read them in the comments section after that post, right here.
Which leads me to my comment.
I was shocked — shocked! — at some of the very inappropriate answers I received, some from members of my community I frankly didn't think even knew the objects and devices they suggested even existed.
Girls — this is Version 2.0.
Not 1.0.
1.0 has been erased from history, tossed down the memory hole.
Please, ladies: it took a long time to get back into the good graces of the MPAA and Disney and all the G–rated, Focus on the Family–Friendly websites that now link to and often feature bookofjoe posts, such as the remarkable $2.99 keychain Bible.
You know where to go if you have those other needs.
But I can no longer help you with them.
I'm sorry — but that's the way it is and that is the way it must be.
With this website now the central recruiting post for prospective CIA agents between the ages of 9 and 14 I do not think there is any alternative.

It's the "Modern Smoke Detector" by Architectural Devices. Check it out here: http://www.ohgizmo.com/2005/05/02/architectural-devices-modern-smoke-detector/
Engadget picked it up a while back. Nice. :)

I should scare you, Lisa. I should serve as a bad example to all of you Joeheads on how an entire morning can trickle away slowly on the Internet. Because, after searching Google and Yahoo images, I decided I would try out visual search engines even to solve this puzzle. But first I had to learn a little more about them:
http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/050824-114948.
They're not all they are cracked up to be yet. You can search for terms, but if you already know what it looks like and don't know what it is, you're out of luck. And between Joe's contest and the quest on my blog this morning to let all of us become our own personal vintners, it's almost noon here.
And,hell, it probably is a smoke alarm anyway. First you think, "No, too obvious." But maybe that's part of the plan - make it look too obvious so you dismiss it.
He's evil. ;)

I did find some excellent song lyrics though:

Okay. I am going to go outside now. Really I am.

Shawn. You are scaring me. Because now I want to go do that, too.

The spy in me just knew she could figure it out. But not by actually knowing the answer, of course.
This is Joe, I thought. He's not re-naming the pictures when he saves them. They aren't original pictures because they aren't sitting outside his bedroom window. He's finding them on a Web site and copying them.
All I have to do is search Image files for the strange names on the files, like Ouih_1, lpugm, p789upoui_3. They are straight from an online catalog somewhere. I searched Catalog City online.
Nothing accomplished. 15 minutes and mission aborted. At this rate, it would probably take less time to just actually figure out what it is. (But I wouldn't have the fun of the covertness of it all.)

I looked at this thing this afternoon right before I went to take myself a nap and I DREAMED about it! It looks like some kind of smoke alarm type thing, but in my dream the thing in the upper left corner was an eye that emitted some kind of destroying pulses and the curved vents were gills that flapped and revealed hideous chomping teeth. It was horrible.
No more "What Am I?" before nap time.

It's a very elegant explanation of quantum theory, the centerpiece of an extremely intelligent fifth grader's science fair project. Have you been skulking around the educational web sites again, Joe?
