Blade Wars: Episode 2 — Schick Quattro Power v Gillette M3Power
Over two years ago I featured these two heavyweights in a shave–off won, surprisingly, by Schick.
That was when razors didn't vibrate.
Times change and old tools learn new tricks.
Gillette came out of the blocks first in May of last year with its M3Power (below),
featuring a triple–bladed battery–powered vibrating head (below).
Now comes Schick over a year later with its recent entry into the vibrating razor arena, the Quattro Power, featuring not three but — Doh! — four vibrating blades.
Gillette's said to be preparing a five–bladed contender called the Fusion, to be introduced next year, but here we deal with reality (Oh, really? — I hadn't realized until you pointed it out...), not vaporware and "real soon now."
This morning's shave–off here at bookofjoe World Headquarters produced a clear-cut — and I use the term advisedly — winner.
Let's just say that should you opt for the Schick you had better pick up a styptic pencil as well 'cause you are gonna lose some blood.
My shave with a new Schick Quattro Power (top and below) left me with six (6) bleeding places on my face.
I so seldom cut myself with the Gillette M3Power that I've stopped purchasing styptic pencils.
I had to rummage around under the sink until I found one to stop the hemorrhaging.
It's odd, the Schick shave felt OK — it just seemed to take a little of my epidermis with it each time it passed by.
In terms of esthetics the Schick is likewise a clear loser: it's bulky, feels cheap in the hand and has an ugly gray, white and orange color scheme.
The winner, by TKO: Gillette.

» The Daily Shave from The Unlawyer
I let my facial hair grow over the long New Years weekend, as is my usual weekly custom, and it was such a pleasure to shave off that three-day growth of stubble.
I am perhaps one of a very few Filipinos who have to shave every day, and for ... [Read More]

Interesting I have had the exact opposite experience. The quattro power is easily (for me) the absolute worst shave I have had in my life. With one day of growth it takes me two cartridges and it feels anything but a smooth shave. The cartridges clog instantly and they dont rinse out. I have used the M3 power and I get a good shave on one cartridge for about 20 days. I dont understand why the quattro power is so horrible. Anyone else have similiar bad experience with it ?

Nice write ups on both the manual and powered razors. I've owned pretty much every Gillette since the Sensor and was generally content with the performance. However, after using the Quattro I was blown away. So much than I bought the Quattro Power as well which now is my daily razor.
Here's my take on the M3 v. Quattro Power. Both shave excellent, no doubt. The M3 feels lighter and is more nimble with the smaller head. I'd say it even cuts closer with a fresh blade. Most importantly the vibrating head fails to cut me like every other Mach 3 variant. However, its major downfalls are the the placement of the 'power' button and its ease to push. You tend to switch it off when you don't mean to. Also, the lubrication strip is absolute junk and holds up to only a few shaves.
With that in mind, despite the bulk of the Schick, its handle is 'grippier' and its buttons are competently placed. It may not cut as close initially, but it lasts longer and cuts smoother. It takes sonme adjusting to switch from the Gillette, but in the end I'm much happier. The quattro has yet to cut me, too.
I'm really surpised how many people dislike the razor...using it everyday I am quite happy and haven't even been remotely tempted to try the Fusion.
