The Song Tapper — 'Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic'

Tappertitle

The oft–cited quotation above, from Arthur C. Clarke's 1961 book "Profiles of The Future," is also known as Clarke's third law.

Well, I am here to report that I have just seen magic, in the form of a "sufficiently advanced technology."

The Song Tapper is very simple: you click on the homepage where it says and then follow these instructions:

Please tap the song's melody using your space bar.

It may help to sing aloud while tapping.

No way, said I, but in the spirit of fun and science and with not a whole lot else to do right now I figured I could devote ten seconds to a little tapping.

Guess what?

The list of songs that came up included my song*.

I'm gobsmacked.

Have some fun, but remember: you really have no business doing this on the clock.

As if.

Hi,

Just randomly found your blog, while I was bored and browsing. I think it is really interesting, and I like your tone and writing style. Stop in and visit mine sometimes if you'd like. I write a lot differently, but like you, I cover lots of random topics.

I'm off to try this experiment now!

Clearly, I am a rhythmic arch-moron. I figured, be simple, don't put it grace notes, don't get fancy, don't try to get it just like it would be written out musically. Just basic melody. Hold the space bar down for a sustained note and so on, like it shows in the video.

Nothing! I did old pop, new pop, classical, ballads, blues, classic jazz, C&W, R&B, etc., etc. The only thing that worked was - guess what? Satisfaction. As in I Can't Get No.

I have no business doing this, period. And dammit, I really needed some magic today. Fooey.

OK, this may be good but if you really want to see some tech magic go to http://20q.net/ Think of a something animal/veggie/mineral/other and then start answering the questions on the screen. Most times the backend program running on the site will guess what you are thinking about. The questions that it asks make this even more magical. Give it try and you'll see what I'm talking about.
