OneBag.com — 'The art and science of traveling light'

Chained

I stopped checking bags on planes years ago and haven't lost one since.

Wait a minute....

Doug Dyment has created a website for those who are unwilling or unable to take my word for it.

Onebagtitle

If you have an I.Q. in triple figures you should be among the multitudes making a beeline for his site instanter.

My rules for packing. 1: Never pack more than you can CARRY (not roll) for a mile. 2: Never pack more than you can CARRY (not roll) while RUNNING from one end of a major airport/station/depot to the other, because your will eventually need to. 3) Never have a bag too big to fit through a revolving door or turnstile, or fit in a phone booth or bathroom stall with you, or to hold on your lap on public transportation. 4) Use a bag with a shoulder strap so you can have both hands free. 5) Never take a carry-on too big or heavy to FLING (not wrestle) into the overhead, or slide under the seat if the overhead is full. Thus my 20" x 10" x 10" Eddie Bauer black nylon duffle bag.

I speak as someone who recently flew on four tiny commuter jets in the last two weeks: people who don't check their bags are annoying. Maybe I would not be so sensitive to it had I not been in the second-to-last-row in each one, but by the time I got to the jetway, it was crowded with people waiting for their "carryons" that wouldn't fit to be unloaded from the bottom of the plane. I see two ways of remedying this. One (the way I remember it having been done when I was too young to be checking myself into planes): measure the bags before letting someone call something a "carryon". If it doesn't fit, CHECK IT. I'm tired of people whining that their bags were lost. Okay, so if that's the way it used to be done, and it's not the way it's done now, there must be a reason. Alright, fine. I have another solution. Let the people who were kind enough to have small bags or checked all their luggage get off the plane first. I'm not going to ask for a seat up front (I mean, it's my own fault I waited until two weeks before the flight to book it, so okay, yeah, I deserve to sit next to the lavatory). But don't make me wait ***once I've gotten off the plane*** because I can't get by your (not YOU your, but the general your) inconsiderate ass.

/rant. Sorry.
