Sparks Energy Beer

Uiyiuyt

Who knew?

Certainly not Mr. out-of-the-loop bookofjoe, that's for sure.

Because when I read Joseph T. Hallinan's July 3 Wall Street Journal story about the caffeine-laced "energy beer" Sparks, it was the first I knew such a thing even existed.

I really do need to get out more.

Note to file: get out more.

Now, where was I?

Oh, yeah, energy shortage fears.

No, that's not right, wait a minute....

Beer, energy beer — that's the ticket.

Long story short: "Sparks is a caffeinated alcohol malt beverage flavored with ginseng, guarana and taurine and has a citric taste."

Yucko.

Read the story for yourself below — I don't have the energy.

Miller to Buy 'Energy Beer' Brands From McKenzie

SABMiller PLC of London said it reached an agreement with McKenzie River Corp. to acquire its caffeine-laced "energy beer" Sparks and Steel Reserve brands for $215 million, in a move designed to lure young drinkers of Starbucks Corp.'s frappuccinos and energy drinks like Red Bull.

The move is almost certain to intensify the battle that is brewing over a small but growing part of the lackluster American beer market: energy beer. These beers, which often include caffeine and caffeine-like substances, have been surging in popularity. Sparks is a caffeinated alcohol malt beverage flavored with ginseng, guarana and taurine and has a citric taste. Steel Reserve is a lager beer.

Demand for energy beers appears strong. SABMiller's Miller Brewing Co. says the Sparks brand, for instance, had a compound annual growth rate of 107% between 2003 and 2005. Last year, it sold 270,000 barrels of the product. The acquisition from McKenzie River, San Francisco, expands Miller's portfolio of energy beers. It already markets Mickey's Stinger, a malt liquor that features more caffeine than a cup of coffee, and two caffeine-like substances: guarana and taurine. Malt liquors generally have more alcohol than beer. Mickey's, for instance, has 7% alcohol by volume, compared with 4.5% that is typical of most American beers. "Sparks and Steel Reserve will have an immediate positive impact on our growth profile," said Norman Adami, president and chief executive of Miller Brewing.

The companies plan to announce the deal today.

U.S. brewing titan Anheuser-Busch Cos. offers two different beers -- Tilt and B(e) -- with caffeine, ginseng and guarana. Anheuser is also test-marketing another caffeinated beer, Natty UP. The category has attracted a number of recent entrants. One new energy beer is Moonshot, produced by a small Boston company, New Century Brewing Co. Moonshot was introduced in 2004 and has since been reformulated, company CEO Rhonda Kallman said. "High-volume domestic beer drinkers are looking for a pick-me-up, particularly after drinking several. And...their preference is to stay in beer." So she reformulated Moonshot and added more caffeine. The total now is 69 milligrams, which she says is about equal to a cup of coffee.

Sparks and Steel Reserve are already brewed by Miller under an agreement with McKenzie River. Miller said completion of the transaction is subject to review by U.S. antitrust authorities. Miller also agreed to develop new products with McKenzie River founder and President Minott Wessinger.

Critics say energy beers simply serve to mask underlying intoxication. "I think it's just another clear way to keep people drinking more," says George Hacker, director of the alcohol policies project at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a nonprofit advocacy organization.

I love sparks. My favorite ones are the black ones...My girlfriends & I drink them before we go out. A great start for great nights. I've drank sparks for years. A very big fan. I'd like to know if anyone knows where to find a sparks neon light.

Sparks is refreshing, fruity, and provides focus/alertness. I don't want to drink many beers - one or two sparks takes the edge off and keeps me moving. Not for everyone - the plus has the best taste, albeit tad bit excessive alcohol. Regular beer is too slovenly, sleepy and carb excessive. We are on the go at work, play and home- don't want a sleepy beer - Sparks hits the spot. Again, not for everyone but if beer is enjoyed by the reader, give the caffeine ones a try - many out there to suit all tastes. Drink responsibly (can you tell I am old!).

i drink sparks all the time. i love it and ive gotten most of my friends turned on it too. if i'm in the mood for something sweeter than beer, i get a 6 pack of sparks and i'm good for the night. its decent priced too. i dont see what the big deal is that they came out with something some people dont like. it definately sells fast around here.

Big fan of Sparks. Stuff tastes great and gives me enough jolt to drink real beer all night. Much better on the rocks and the plus is far superior to the other two.

sparks is actually pretty great. cheaper than red bull & vodka, and two of them will make you pretty crazy (read: fun). these are the best thing for making it all night on a friday night out.

i didn't read the article but mere mention of energy beer brings to mind: energy, to feel motivated, move about and beer, to slow down possibly go to sleep, so if you drink the stuff the two conteract and in the end as you toss the can in the bush you feel normal. so why bother drinking the stuff? i can't imagine they spent a second tweaking the flavor. these brewers are so desperate to find the next drink they combine anything with the hope our youth will buy it. such desperate sots. at this point these drinks are nothing but novel alcohol deliver systems.
