Any Briton will tell you a hot water bottle has to have a cover. Otherwise the heat gets out too fast. They're too hot to start with and don't last all night. A nice thick fleecy cover will put all this right. Have a look on the British eBay and search for hot+water+bottle+cover. There's some splendid covers out there.
We were camping this Easter in Cornwall. Well below zero (we use centigrade) the first couple of nights with ice forming on leftover tea in the tent but the kids were happy in sleeping bags with a duvet over the top provided they had their hot water bottle to cuddle.
The alternative is a cat, but they're prone to becoming prickly if you cuddle them too hard, or a hot water daughter - few things are as toasty in bed as a baby, provided they're not too young to manage their own temperature control.
