I have seen the future and it's voice-controlled computers a la 'Blade Runner' — but in the meantime, here's a multimillion dollar kludge for whomever's clever enough to bring it to market

It's a no-brainer.
Give us a wireless mouse that works like Nintendo's new Wii game control interface — in 3-D.
Sounds simple enough.

But clearly it's not, as otherwise all of us would be using one right now.
I hate the mice currently available: they're either too heavy (Apple's Bluetooth device); too awkward (MoGo's nifty stores-and-charges-in-PC card slot iteration); or too dependent on a decent surface (all wired mice).
Who wouldn't want to conduct the band while working on their computer?
Yes, I know that eventually we'll do away with the mouse and have smooth-as-silk voice activation.
In fact, real soon now is what I hear — and have been for about ten years.
No matter.
Bring us the Wii equivalent and watch the rupees pour in.
Then, for your next trick, cram it down into a ring to be worn on any finger to eliminate the need to pick up and put down the device.
w00t!
And guess what: there are always going to be environments where silence is required/preferred, so you're always gonna have a legacy market.

Now enough wasting time here — head out to your skunk works and get cracking.

There already exists such a device.
The "Gyromouse" by Gyration [http://www.gyration.com].
I've owned one. It works great for presentations, or for lying in bed controling a media pc, or such.
Reasonably priced too.

Well you can already buy a tablet and a touchscreen monitor which in effect can give you a mouse that you work by touching it to the screen itself.
