TechnoDolt™ Guide To Assessing a Tech Reviewer

Zunejhj

If anyone's capable of offering such advice, it's me.

My quick and dirty method is so very simple and centers around one particular aspect of a reviewer's description of Microsoft's new Zune (above).

If the reviewer says that among Zune's pluses is that it's got a bigger screen (3" v 2.5" for the largest iPod) but leaves it at that, the reviewer is worthless.

Why?

Because to not make the reader aware of the fact that the screens of the two devices contain precisely the same amount of information — i.e., that both have resolutions of 320 x 240 — means that either the reviewer doesn't know or, even worse, knows but ignores the fact that the same number of pixels presented on a larger screen = worse resolution = a fuzzier picture.

Here is a link to a good reviewer's take on the Zune.

Here is a link to a bad reviewer.

Am I right or am I right?

"but ignores the fact that the same number of pixels presented on a larger screen = worse resolution = a fuzzier picture."

If looking at it from the same focal point...Zune wants to be the 'social' music player and that would mean that you need to present your image to folks who aren't directly connected by 2 feet of wire.

Having said that, the television shows I download from iTunes are 640x480 (they use to be 320 x 240 so they could be played easier on the iPod), and I couldn't imagine not watching them on my 20" monitor upsized to like 1200 x something so I can watch it while still in bed.

So yeah, bigger screen at the same resolution is good. Bigger screen with better resolution, better. Zune...as worthless as the review (actually downgraded my iPod to a Nano as I wanted something more portable...so maybe even bigger screen isn't a big draw to some of us).
