What's in your mascara?
Or your lip gloss, or foundation?
You haven't a clue, do you?
Maybe it's better that way.
For those who prefer to drill down, there's the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep website.
"Skin Deep is a personal care product safety guide with in-depth information on 14,835 products — 1,051 brands of lotion, lip balm, deodorant, sunscreen and other popular products — and the 7,093 ingredients that form them."
Search by brand, product or ingredient, and find out things you wish you hadn't learned about relevant hazards and toxins.
"The FDA cannot require companies to do safety testing of their products before marketing," was the position of the FDA Office of Cosmetics and Colors in 1995, and nothing's changed in the past 12 years.
"With its core of 37 toxicity and regulatory databases, Skin Deep provides safety ratings and brand-by-brand comparisons that can help consumers choose safer products."
No — that's not Hannibal's kid brother.
