bookofjoe MoneyMaker™ — Solid Toothpaste

Hbhihpi

Last time I took a plane trip I had to put my toothpaste in a little plastic bag of its own, amidst the scrambling at the security checkpoint.

I'd already abandoned my own shampoo before I left home, preferring to use whatever was in the hotel.

Then I got to thinking: as long as hotels seem to be doing their brain-dead imitation, not twigging to the fact that it'd be a heckuva lot better to put a little tube of toothpaste in their sinkside display and bag the little bottle of conditioner and/or hand lotion, why don't Crest and Colgate offer solid toothpaste, much as is the case with deodorant?

No more plastic bag foolishness since that'll eliminate the gel/ointment/liquid state from one's carry-on.

You want a map?

OK.

Stack individual use portions of the solid toothpaste vertically, with an easily breakable, ingestible and differently-colored separation layer between them.

Sheesh, do I have to carry your sacks of money to the bank for you?

At least do a little something, what?

Anyway, it's so very simple — and yet, it's not happened.

So, there it is — big $$$ for whomever plucks this low-hanging fruit off the tree.

Why don't I take advantage of my own thinking instead of giving away the potential riches?

Inquire within.

Note: My crack research team did come up with a solid toothpaste available in the U.S.

It's pictured up top and you can buy it here.

Two problems:

1. You have to buy 24 at a time.

2. I get the distinct impression that it's manufactured in you-know-where. And how they get it to become solid, well — maybe it's best not to go there.

As they say in the dental business, "caveat paste-or."

Or something like that.

It's been over a year since this post was written, but I'm going backwards through the posts... a few a day, plus the new ones, and I found 3 different toothpastes that would work as carry-ons:
1)DentaKit Dry pre-Pasted Disposable Toothbrushes: Available online at www.dentakit.com/ ($5.99 for 10).
2)Oral B Brushups: If you have a finger you have a toothbrush with these textured finger sleeves that leave your breath fresh. No water? No problem. Available at health and beauty stores and pharmacies.
3)Travelon Powdered Toothpaste: In the days before tubes of toothpaste, powder ruled. Now it is back! Available online at www.drugstore.com/ ($4.99 for 1 ounce).

Because, as we all know, explosives are never solids, always gels and pastes.

Actually, toothpaste powder has always been around, at least in Taiwan (where I was born and lived till age 7). Too bad the powder form never seemed to catch on beyond "super strong toothpaste powder for smokers" there...
