How to respond to being trashed online

20link1901

"Every time anyone says anything bad about you, go have five people write, 'That is absolutely correct.'"

So said Mike Godwin, general counsel for Wikipedia, in an August 20, 2007 New York Times article by Noam Cohen.

I like it.

But then — I would, wouldn't I?

Some people get their jollies and boost their egos by playing superior...'tis a pity that bullies must wander onto every playground...

Oh, I should probably add, that wasn't an invitation or anything. I couldn't GUARANTEE my explosion. I'm not got rid of that easily.

If I did the blogging or websiting thing, I'd think (as indeed I basically already do) of myself as such an extreme internet nonentity -- a cipher, a non-blip, negligible, lint, if you will -- that if someone or ones out there felt compelled to spend their time and energy to insult/trash my profound insignificance, I'd feel so impressed with myself that I'd flare up and explode like a supernova.

I've never understood why people get upset about someone on that thiar interweb saying you ain't purdy and stuff. Looking for information on a product earlier this year, I ran into my name on some music site and just had a laugh at all the crap people were saying about me, though the best one was:

"You've go to love Clif.
Or not.
But, sensibly, I doubt he cares either way."

The guy summed up my position in its entirety...the internet is too big to worry about who you offend, and too small to try to please anyone but yourself.
