Meditation on Apple's new Bluetooth keyboard as a bridge to a tablet computer
Looking at the gorgeous piece of kit (above and below), which I ordered this morning immediately upon entering Steve Jobs's reality distortion field before coming to my senses and realizing it won't work with my Mac running OSX 10.3.9 (it requires 10.4.10 and up), it occurred to me that it would be awfully nice if it synced with the iPhone (present or future versions).
But what if Apple offered a simple 12" screen, like that of the late, lamented PowerBook G4 series, with current iMac all-in-one technology built in such that you could use it as a stand-alone tablet via touchscreen, like the iPhone, or as a laptop display, connecting the screen via a built-in dock to the new keyboard.
I'd buy one in a yoctosecond.

If nothing else, a tablet makes a great platform for light web browsing and reading feeds, comics and books...

A tablet with an iPhone-style touch interface and optional Bluetooth keyboard and mouse would be incredibly useful to me.

90% of the time, the only thing the keyboard does for my MacBook is to prop open the screen.
I really don't get the allure of the tablet...I tried one for a while when I thought it was cool and new, but honestly, I got nothing out of it. Had to use one hand to keep it propped open, had to get out the pen...or you had to flip it up with its little easel that was unwieldy (far more so than my MacBook) and then pull the bluetooth keyboard off of it, and then hope it all worked. I hated the pen-typing. I think the tablet works on a smaller scale -- I loved my Newtons, and my palms, but HATED the PenTablet Computer (except when it came to drawing...it was marginally better than my Wacom...but since drawing comprises maybe 0.05% of my time, I can't really want it for something like this).

I got this keyboard last week. It feels just like a laptop keyboard -- but with a wee bit more space between keys. Even with OS x 10.4.10 you need to upload a driver so that the rearanged feature keys work properly. My only gripe so far is that I wish they would have put a big gap between the A key and Caps Lock so I wouldn't hit it aCCIDENTALLY.
