Disposable Bioplates
Sounds pretty futuristic, eh?
Or maybe it's a new rock group.
Wrong on both counts.
You could be eating off them next week if you play your cards right.
Long story short, from the March 5, 2008 Washington Post Food section:
- Biodegradable, all of it
Plates, platters and cutlery made in India from leaves of the Adaki palm tree may be the next big thing in biodegradable, compostable, disposable dinnerware. Their look is natural and rustic; the leaves are formed in heated molds, and the resulting products are waterproof and stain-resistant. They can be used in the microwave and the oven; we baked a poundcake in the "oval dish" size. That size, roughly 8 1/2 by 4 inches, is sold in 100-count packs for $80, but 25-count packs are available. To see the complete line, go to www.eco-visionusa.com.

Biodegradeable only makes sense if you're going to compost the result. If you're going to chuck it in landfill it may actually make things worse, since in the anaerobic conditions underground it'll often produce a lot of methane as it gets broken down, which is far worse for the environment.
