Down the scoured limestone stairs
The tigers tread on pads of quiet.
Who goes, who goes this night of dreams
This windless night of lantern moon?...
Secretly they fan and hunt
These tigers—who can tell their course?
Who cries, who runs, this drumming night
Who is broken? Bleeds the moon?
Along the high streets, tigers go—
Jesus save me from the sight.
