'If I have a phone that has full GPS, why would I go out and buy a (stand-alone navigation system) from Garmin?'
File this post under "Even a blind, anosmic pig finds an acorn every now and then."
Back on April 24 I wondered precisely the same thing as tech analyst Tim Bajarin, president of Creative Strategies whose question in the headline above appears in Michelle Kessler's article in today's USA Today about iPhone Version 2.0, announced with much fanfare yesterday by the man.
Here's the relevant part of my earlier post: "While you're dumping your LoJack might as well toss Garmin, TomTom and their ilk in as well — who's gonna pay $300 and up for something (a portable GPS receiver) you can get free via your cellphone and Google Maps?"
Same as it ever was.

You know TomTom just announced they are going to sell their software for iPhone users.
I love my iPhone and the gMaps implementation works -- but it doesn't really work the same way as a dedicated GPS does. For instance, always having to try to reorient the map with the direction I'm traveling is obnoxious. The newest implementation fixes some of the problems but still not as good as a dedicated GPS system.
Lets hope the TomTom software makes their hardware redundant and they can simply focus on making the best software around!
