Acrobatic Swan Lake

Above and below, performed by the Guangdong Acrobatic Troupe of China.

The top video records its debut performance last month at the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden.

Premiered in 2006 and co-produced with the Shanghai City Dance Company, the production combines elements of classical dance, traditional Chinese acrobatics and elements of Peking Opera.

Sorry, got sent to me by a friend I use to work near and I've shared this with almost everyone else :) One of those truths. Either one gets it or doesn't :) The full story can be read on (ick) MSNBC: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25797678/

You know, I really love ballet (I was "forced" to take it for many years as a kid, even), and gymnastics & acrobatics, (and of course, opera), but honestly, when I watch these amazing performances, sometimes, in between thinking how incredible and near-impossible to do it all is, and whatnot, my lizard- or amphibian- or just generally the lowest-functioning-brain-part takes over and I'm thinking about how the women (and maybe a few men) are all looking at the guys', uh, package (can I say "package" here?) and the guys are all thinking about the head dancing girl & how bendy she'd be in the sack (can I say "sack" here?). You know? Am I the only complete philistine heathen vulgar yokel out here? No, don't answer. I couldn't face it.

Impressive production but, maybe this is just me and I'm definitely a traditionalist, did the ballet lose some gracefulness along the way? I thought so at least. Especially in the solos, they were distracting and detracted from the beautiful forms achieved by the ballerinas. The whole sliding into the poses thing was smooth but weird. Not yet a fan, not sure I'll ever be.
