I've said it before, and I'll say it again -- wearing a helmet does not always prevent injury.
There are many times where wearing a helmet will increase the chances of being hit. A noted traffic psychologist studied this phenomenon a few years ago -- if you are wearing a helmet, cars are FAR more likely to give you less room than if you don't. The expectation is that if you are not wearing a helmet, you are not as likely to be an expert rider and as such, cars give far more leeway. Far more likely to be hit with a helmet than without.
I know from my own 'research', my audio spatial orientation is gone if I am wearing a helmet. It is the second most important sense needed for biking (motoring or peddling). Biking in town, I need to be able to hear around me -- and those half helmets do nothing for protection. They are next to worthless (at least for motorcycles...for bicycles, the standard helmet is alright for falls at standard speeds -- but are going to do absolutely NOTHING for a collision). Wearing a helmet has given me quite a few close calls on my motorcycle where I could have heard and avoided the event in the first place.
If you avoid an accident, you never have to find out what will happen if you had one.
Beyond that, on the highway? You'd have to be a moron for not having a full face helmet -- as well as full leather. No excuse. They've both saved my life a few times. (Ride a few years and you will have accidents regardless of how good a rider you are...you will eventually find yourself in a situation you can't get out of because of idiot drivers).

You know, I always thought that helmets are overrated, and I never realized how much people mistake the safety of helmets until I saw this add. Who ever made this add, obviously wasn't thinking about how helmets actually work when he/she designed the last one there. "I never wear a helmet, they don't look cool", implies that this unfortunate individual, not wearing a helmet, got into an accident and ironically in trying to look cool, now is ugly and disfigured. It makes sense, if your an idiot! Let me break this down, helmets protect your HEAD, nothing else, this victim clearly has a bashed up face, broken neck, body cast, etc. Helmets are not omni tools of protection, and whoever designed this add needs to get that straight!

It always amazed me how my California in-laws would remark about the irresponsibility of our helmetless Ohio bikers, but never blink an eye at their own motorcyclists splitting traffic on the freeway.
So take it one step further...Which is more dangerous: going helmet-free or splitting traffic?

There are always some small-minded people who think that a helmet won't prevent major injuries and that it's more dangerous to wear one. Can't imagine how dumb people are wo don't wear a helmet because of "Biking in town, I need to be able to hear around me". Normal biking helmets let you do this, and, by the way, you don't hear much more in cars. Furthermore, your brain is under the protected part of your head, so it won't be damaged if your teeth are broken. Personally, I would have been seriously injured for many times if I wouldn't have worn a helmet, probably WITH permanent brain damage. Wear a helmet, no matter what others say!

I'm sorry deadcode, but quite a few studies show that you ARE more safe not wearing a helmet in certain circumstances than you are with.
It isn't anything like the studies about seatbelts...seatbelts saves lives each and everytime you wear them.
Live your small-minded life if you want...and to be honest, if people WOULD wear helmets in the approprate places, lives would be saved. Almost every idiot that hates helmets in the city also hate them on the highway -- where there is a great advantage to wearing them. Most people can't make the distinction...as such, it would be a good idea for them to put them on each and everytime. If only an intelligence test was given where rights were assigned or denied based upon the actions and opinions of the citizens, life would be a lot simpler. Sounds as though your rights would be taken away for calling folks small-minded.
Then again, what do I know...I only study intelligence for a living. I use to be good at discerning ones intelligence from internet comments...but my religious upbringing has taught me that judging others is wrong, so I'm not going to make any rash decisions about your supposed mindedness.
