Mac Mail dropdown menu: Which 10 names?

Aaaaaaaa

For many years I've used Mac Mail quite happily.

I mean, it comes installed on each Mac I buy and even TechnoDolt™ moi can figure it out.

The other day I noticed something that I'd pretty much taken for granted all these years without stopping to wonder about — namely, that 10 names from the address book drop down from the "To" line in outgoing email if you just put in a single letter and then wait.

The first second of waiting the little thingie spins around, that wheel (not the beach ball), then at 2 seconds a name appears highlighted in blue, and if you just sit there doing nothing (that's my default setting — as if you weren't well aware...) a little window (top) drops down with 10 names in it.

My question is: Why those particular 10?

Are they the ones most recently used?

Most used since forever?

Random?

I can't figure it out and the chance of the answer ever arriving here at Doh! Central is vanishingly small so I'm throwing it out to joehead nation.

Well?

Go to the Windows menu and choose "Previous Recipients." This will bring up a window listing all the addresses you've sent to in the past. It uses these (along with addresses from your address book) to suggest people you might be intending to send e-mail to.

The key thing about this window is that you can delete entries from it. So when your friend changes their e-mail and Mail.app keeps trying to you to send to their old one? Just kill it in this window.

I used the program for about five years before I knew about this simple little key feature.

I bet you typed a "B."

I believe it's a common letter in the name or email address. If you enter a lesser common letter first--say, Q--you're likely to get no names unless someone has a Q in their name or email address. The first letter you enter will be common to all the names or addresses you enter.

Joe - Don't you know, Apple has developed technology that can read your mind! Maybe you had been thinking about those email recipients when Apple last scanned your brain.
