Things Shouldn't Be So Hard — by Kay Ryan

A life should leave
deep tracks:
ruts where she
went out and back
to get the mail
or move the hose
around the yard;
where she used to
stand before the sink,
a worn-out place;
beneath her hand
the china knobs
rubbed down to
white pastilles;
the switch she
used to feel for
in the dark
almost erased.
Her things should
keep her marks.
The passage
of a life should show;
it should abrade.
And when life stops,
a certain space—
however small—
should be left scarred
by the grand and
damaging parade.
Things shouldn't
be so hard.

Arresting, brilliant.
And really good, too.

It makes me think about how we're all of us, except for those very few, poets who are just poetically constipated. And every now and then a person will have an accident of real poetry, by any standards, and with luck there's somebody around to notice it. You could write a book, even: "Accidents of Real Poetry, By Any Standards - 1997-2005". It could happen.

Especially "please tell me how to/where I can order this". Especially.

A good poem, Joe. A keeper. Where did you find it?

How gut wrenching. This was... well... it just stuns.
