J.D. Biersdorfer tells you how to save your bacon (as it were)

Spudpassport

The savvy New York Times tech columnist had this to offer on August 13, 2008 as her "Q & A" feature "Tip of the Week":

Taking Important Documents On The Road

If you have a scanner, you can easily keep digital copies of all your important documents when traveling. Just scan in copies of your passport, driver’s license, visas, prescriptions, medical records and customer-service phone numbers for your bank and credit card companies. Store the files on a U.S.B. drive to keep your information right in your pocket if you lose the paper versions on your travels. Most computers in hotels and Internet cafes have a U.S.B. port if you need the information. Storing the digital data on a secure, password-protected online storage site is another option, in case you lose the U.S.B. drive too.

....................

If in addition you manage to lose your mind, well, I'm afraid you're just out of luck.

Ms. Diersdorfer also should have noted the importance of encrypting the data on the USB drive itself. That's identity theft in a keychain, and thumb drives are more easily stolen than documents.
