Is there any other kind?

Ryan McGeary, who created Letmegooglethatforyou (featured here on November 30, 2008) emailed me last evening, saying "Thanks for the write-up. For a disturbing peek into the psyche of the internet, also check out LMGTFY."

"@coderifous and @rmm5t decided to share the fun they had while tailing the LMGTFY log files. They take no responsibility for any disturbing queries."

That goes double for me.

No need to feel sorry, Maximillian.

The recent.json file is updated every few minutes on the server with the last couple hundred queries that went through LMGTFY. So you are getting a near real time feed. There's trade offs to be made when doing a page like live.lmgtfy.com, and while we could go nuts with a implementation that keeps live connections and pushes truly real time results, there's just no need for that level of complexity. These aren't bank transactions, just an interesting and frequently ridiculous peek at what people are doing with lmgtfy.

We could change it to notquitelivebutalmostsothatthedifferencedoesntmatter.lmgtfy.com - but that just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Cheerio,
Jim (@coderifous)

Thanks for the post.

@Maximillian, While technically true, does it really matter? The recent.json is refreshed every several minutes from the actual tail of the access logs. This makes it as real-time as possible without unnecessary complexity. Simple solutions built and launched in a few hours, FTW! You gotta admit, it's still strangely addictive to watch -- kinda like a car crash.

Sorry to say, but this isn't a live feed.

See here:
http://live.lmgtfy.com/recent.json

If you load the site on one computer, then go to another computer and load it, the 2nd computer will show what the 1st computer just did instead of being in-sync.
