Joe,
Unless we've changed the meaning of digital, I don't think this thermometer is.
It looks very much like the "plastic" thermometer strip we have attached to our terrarium, and there's certainly no electricity or electronics involved. I believe it's a chemical reaction from heat that makes the colors "light up", but I'll leave that to the research team to figure out.
On that same note, I wonder if the light from the glowing faceplate is bright enough to allow you to read the embedded thermometer at night?
