Nicholas D. Kristof's Top 13 Children's Books

Charlotte

As seen in his column in today's New York Times, they are (from easiest to hardest):

1. "Charlotte's Web"

2. The Hardy Boys series

3. "Wind in the Willows"

4. The Freddy the Pig series

5. The Alex Rider series

6. The Harry Potter series

7. "Gentle Ben"

8. "Anne of Green Gables"

9. "The Dog Who Wouldn't Be"

10. "Little Lord Fauntleroy"

11. "On to Oregon"

12. "The Prince and the Pauper"

13. "Lad, a Dog"

Well, at least I'm consistent, in that I'm as poorly read in the children's book arena as the adult: I've read only three titles on Kristof's list ("Charlotte's Web, The Hardy Boys and "The Prince and the Pauper").

Hunh, me too...only ones I read were Prince & Pauper and Charlotte's Web. Never read the Hardys; I was too busy reading Nancy Drew & Sherlock Holmes and such. And yeah -- where IS Doctor Seuss? I'd stick some H.G. Wells and Jules Verne on there, and some more Twain (Huckleberry, of course), but then, how old are these "children" they're talking about? I thought Julius Caesar was great for kids. Weird storms, self-mutilation, bloody murder, suicide, skulduggery, high comedy (Brutus & Cassius and their inane bitch-fights), hot music (Lucius on harp) -- a great yarn. Especially if kids read a kind of, uh, "translation" of it before they read Shakespeare's fancy words, so they'll get an idea of what all's going on. And look -- I just happen to have one here in my pocket that I did eons ago, for the fun of it, and, I never thought I'd say this, but, I'll probably put the whole damn thing on my (gulp) blog.
