I was 19 years old the first time I ever went to Havana in 1989. What I saw, was not the happening, prosperous place this clip depicts. So distant from it in fact and, so economically depressed was it, that a woman approached me to ask if I would sell her the extra toilet paper roll that had been placed in my hotel bathroom -- just remembering that incident depresses me still.
Nevertheless, under the grime and rubble, there was a tattered glamor to Havana, the phantom remnants of a bygone era now only possible to envision because of captured images like these. Havana was beautiful once. What is left of that physical beauty resides mostly now in the mind's eye of exiled Cubans. Only there really is it as lovely as this film shows.
