Bear Bells — Protect Yourself and Children From Bears

Better safe than sorry.

Let those bears know that you’re coming — you don’t want to have a run-in with the wrong one.

Bear bells attach to your pack and gently chime to alarm any potentially harmful predators — the key is not to startle them.

Has magnetic bar to silence bell when not in use.

Comments

There are bears at Fort Steele, BC

The public notice warns users to use bear bells and pepper spray. There's also a scatology guide that helps the outdoorsman recognize feces (droppings) one might find in the wild.

These would have come in handy; when I was a kid there was a period in which I had to walk over a field and through the woods to get to my bus stop -truly- and I had to wear a cow bell (that perplexed the cows) in order to give the wild animals (bears mostly) a notice of my presence. The last hundred metres was a gravel road and I'd hurriedly stuff the cowbell into my lunch box and hope it was muffled well enough -I don't think it fooled anyone. Hilarious to see these tiny little bear bells!

Nathan: My coffee went up my nose. That was a funny joke.

Which reminds me of a joke:

Q: How do you protect yourself from bears while hiking?
A: Carry pepper spray to spray the bears with, wear bells to warn them you're coming, and keep an eye out for bear droppings to recognize their territory.

Q: How do you recognize bear droppings?
A: It smells like pepper and has bells in it.
