You can secure to a pole, but bikes locked this way often fall over or rotate and block the pavement. A common theft method is to lift a locked bicycle over the top of the signpost, after taking the sign off. Two thieves can even lift bikes over a tall post.
The Cyclehoop helps prevent the above. At the same time it helps save pavement space as the city would not need to dig up the pavement and install a seperate bike rack.

I've been away and am catching up on some of your older posts. If you needed to secure two bicycles, why not just secure the two front and two back wheels together around the pole? I guess it's the technodolt in me, but I just don't see why the pole itself doesn't suffice for securing your bike to. What does this gadget accomplish?
