bookofjoe's winter wonderland

Above and below, what Gray Cat and I see when we look out the window right now.

Below, a yardstick against the inner glass.

If you look closely at the next two pictures, taken level with the top of the snowfall, you'll see the snow is nearly 19" high.

Consider also that the patio outside is 3" lower than my living room floor, so that comes to... hold on a sec, let me get my calculator... 22" of snow on the ground so far here at bookofjoe World Headquarters®™©.

And it continues to come steadily down.

Nice.

My friend Joe, that looks like a dusting from my podunk Colorado town. Enjoy!

I recall the day Humphrey first encountered snow.... I think if he had seen that he would have run back inside and found comfort with a bag of Doritos....

Many thanks Flauist for the links.

My favorite line was "Something of cease and peace...."

Are you gonna go out and "write" your name in it? If you do will you take a picture of it for us readers? The name, that is, not the act.

I love how the snow piles up so neatly into thick, rounded, loaf-y looking additions to whatever it lands on -- that always looks so cool (and cold). The most snow I've ever seen here in Atlanta is 8 inches worth when we had a surprise snowfall in April (!) once. Went to Kansas once and saw almost 3 feet. Beautiful to look at but wow what a pain in the butt.

Anyway, I can't ever see snow without thinking about that Conrad Aiken story, "Silent Snow, Secret Snow". Way back in the darks, Rod Serling had that on a Night Gallery episode. Very strange tale -- if anybody's interested (in two parts):

And an even stranger black and white version:

I wonder how much it will have snowed when it's all done,,, If the kitties go out in it will they sink down in when they step on it? That would be interesting to see.

Gray cat's profile provides the right touch to the photos, which otherwise would be blank.

Reminds me of Robert Heinlein's "The Door Into Summer", about a writer (Heinlein) and his cat, who rented a house in the Connecticut during the summer. Writer rigged a cat door out one of the back bedrooms. When winter arrived, Cat, dismayed at the snow, took Writer to each of the eleven or so doors, hoping to find one that would lead to summer.

One review said Heinlein described a cat better than a cat had ever been described before.

Beautiful. We truly live in an amazing world!

Oh, and the rug pattern looks great on the wooden floor.
