Valery Gergiev conducts โ with a toothpick
Wrote Flautist, "I almost [soiled myself] laughing when I saw this.... Just wondered if anybody else thought it was funny."
Put me down, for one.

Let's see, Miles, if I remember correctly, they say the shorter the stick, the tinier the pr - uh-oh...

You know what they say about conductors with tiny batons don't you? ;-)

Another thing that makes it funny as hell, to me, anyway, is the way he tears through the thing. I've never heard Ruslan & Ludmilla played in such a frenzy before - he snorts through it so fast you can hardly get any of the goodie out of it. I think when he was selecting his baton to beat time with, he thought, hmmm, if I use the 12-incher, all that weight will slow me down...maybe a pencil...no, I have a swizzle stick left over from my pe-concert rum & Coke, hmmm...I've got it - this toothpick from one of those little bacon-wrapped hotdogs I ate yesterday at that fund-raiser, that'll do the trick...
