Since joining a CSA, we've had an abundance of veggies (potatoes, onions, squash, etc.) We swapped out some kitchen cabinets for lateral files (with foil tape strategically placed on hidden holes for any curious mice). This allows us to easily cull for rottens and makes the kitchen look more deductible (there are real files in the upper drawers.) We love the lat files for other food storage as well --you can pull out the drawer and see what's in the back. Plus it's sort of hep/hip looking. We're in a loft, though; so we can get away with this sort of zaniness.

They will spoil faster in this enclosed space.

Sphincter, yes!
Not in my kitchen. Too Cronenberg.

There will always be one or more in the group of food that will ripen (rot)faster than the rest, hence, produce placed in a colander in a low cupboard, where a person can monitor the vegetables is best.

At first I really liked them. Then I thought, hmmm, kinda reminds me of a birth canal and then I thought, no, more like a sphincter. Not really the look I want in my kitchen. Ah well.

Wow, that's just brilliant.
...and now I'm wondering if I couldn't sew something similar myself.
Stupid new sewing hobby.
