Violet-backed starling — Episode 2

Cinnyricinclus_leucogaster_-_20040821

So many readers enjoyed Episode 1 on April 6, 2010 that I decided this dazzling bird merited an encore.

As did Flautist, who burned the midnight oil hunting down the spectacular photo up top.

I was looking at this beautiful bird and remembering this article I just read in the Guardian. Hope it doesn't vanish with all the rest of them.

Birds. Oy vey iz mir. Don't get me started.
I love them, but a mocker has set up shop in a pyracantha bush immediately outside one of my bedroom windows (sleeping w/ windows open since it's not really hot inside...YET) and it stays up the whole blessed night and sings and whoops & hollers - it imitates everything, including tree frogs, cats, dogs, farty motorcycle noises, kids screaming - and it can't be reasoned with. Wikipedia says it's probably an "unmated" male looking for some action, so I'm hoping it'll get laid real soon and calm down.
