My dear Mr. Peach,

The ontogeny of this family of music is well documented by M. Waters in his seminal work, The Blues Had a Baby and They Called it Rock & Roll. Soul music is derived from the family Rhythm & Blues. Unfortunately, a cousin had a bastard offspring known as Disco, devolving into Rap, Hip Hop and other, even more base, sounds akin to trucks loaded with squealing pigs slamming into pile drivers.

Cf. Aretha Franklin, Al Green & Barry White for Soul.

See also, Robert Johnson (soul sold) and Ice Cube (soulless).

N.B. 1910 Fruitgum Co. (sticks to soles of shoes - worse than Rap)

I know this sounds so tired but,

music had a soul then.

So sad to hear. The Grass Roots were a fixture of my early adolescence. Always remembered fondly.

Live fast, die young and leave a good looking corpse. Pete Seeger disagrees with that pattern but Jim Morrison, Janice Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, et al., ad infinitum espouse the former lifestyle. Keith (Rasputin) Richards is in another class, altogether.
