I used to routinely explode capacitors due to far less over voltage than shown here. No doubt that cap experienced an internal short - but - like the author I'm impressed that the can remained intact.

No, I was not trying to explode caps - I was building linear amplifiers using two 6LQ6s in push-pull when a tube failed B+ went straight to the caps... There used to be money in building such devices for the 11 meter band in NYC....albeit that the linear would take 3.75 watts in and kick out 100-125. Way over what the regs permitted..... Those days are long gone as is the statute of limitations.
