The Popinator

Wrote reader Alan Fick about the video he sent along yesterday, "American ingenuity at its best."

Precisely.

This demonstrates why France is a dead country (or theme park as William Gibson aptly described it): nothing like the Popinator could ever be invented there.

Not even close.

The Popinator is nice as far as viral marketing campaigns go, I guess, but geez, you've gotta learn to spot the signs of a hoax. Besides the fact that eating popcorn in any other form than a handful seems silly, I knew it wasn't real about ten second into the video, then did a search:

"The co-founders of Thinkmodo dreamed up the gadget which actually fires popcorn not by voice command, but remote control. Catching the kernels required repeated takes for the video."

I believe the French are now entitled to a single collective "feelthy eenglish swine!" taunt.
