These have been around for some time - I used one while backpacking in the 1980s (it included some kind of iodization resin...made the water taste a bit off but no illnesses to report). They fell out of sight in favor of the hand-pumped (and now gravity fed) microfiltration systems that can do a large volume of water and are about the same volume if a bit heavier.

Joe,
These are out of stock on Amazon. An eBay lot convinced it is the same item and I bought one on your advice: http://www.ebay.com/itm/LIFESTRAW-THE-WORLDS-BEST-EMERGENCY-WATER-PURIFICATION-FILTER-NEW-/130760107878?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item1e71e8e766
