Dead Malls

Screen Shot 2014-03-13 at 10.57.33 AM

There's a website for that: who knew?

Wikipedia's got an article on the subject.

If you're really feeling nostalgic or just want to burn a few minutes doing something close to nothing (but different from the day before), "Wikipedia's list of defunct store chains encompasses most stores that are no more."

There's also a list of defunct department stores focused on city-specific retail emporia.

Sic transit gloria mundi, indeed.

Wait a sec... what's that music I'm hearing?

The one that made me sad is the story of the Sherman Oaks Galleria. I remember its heyday and decline, especially the cheesy stores that sold junky purses in florescent lighting on wall hooks, my shoes echoing on the marble floors as I walked through the near empty mall. It seems to have some life in it these days, a Cheesecake factory, DSW, offices, movies. It's enough, I suppose, but I can't help it, I have a soft spot for the 80's.
