Back in 1980 I was a young sprout of 17, working on building an electric guitar for an independent study project. The good folks at Kamaka were an invaluable resource, generously providing advice and guidance, and cutting me an ebony fretboard for a pittance. They were the go-to uke makers even then, and I've never forgotten their patience and kokua.

I love beautifully made musical instruments as much as I do anything in the world, and I have the greatest admiration for virtuosic playing (and he does it) on any instrument, but I dislike the sound of the ukulele intensely, and I don't know why. It's an inoffensive little thing, not inherently whiny or overly raucous or grating. Yet, I love those very qualities in the accordion, which has to be one of the most hated instruments of all time, able to make any annoying tune intolerably irritating, according to some:
