What a great picture, and 19 years old! It looks like an example of how he said he liked to get a fix on a character by working from the outside in - if the makeup & costume felt right, something clicked and he knew who he was playing.
Pauline Kael once described him as the wittiest of all actors, and I would agree. There was something wonderfully self-conscious about his performances that I loved; even in the gimmicky "Sleuth" he cracked me up
