What is it like to be struck by lightning?

For an article that appeared in the July 13, 2017 Guardian, Charlotte Huff interviewed a number of survivors.

Their accounts are beyond harrowing.

From the story: "Of every 10 people hit by lightning, nine will survive to tell the tale. But they could suffer a variety of short- and long-term effects. The list is lengthy and daunting: cardiac arrest, confusion, seizures, dizziness, muscle aches, deafness, headaches, memory deficits, distractibility, personality changes, and chronic pain, among others."

LS & ESSI (Lightning Strike & Electric Shock Survivors, International) is an organization whose members share one thing: they've all been struck by lighting.

The group began in the early 1990s with 13 survivors and now has nearly 2,000 members, in the U.S. and 13 other countries.

Internet Speed Test: Fast, Cheap [and Under Control]

Screen Shot 2017-08-10 at 8.54.46 PM

I happened on fast.com last week: it's the simplest, easiest-to-use internet speed test site I've yet to encounter.

It's hard to see how it could be any more minimalist: unlike speedtest.net (which requires you to click "GO" and takes 10-15 seconds to yield a download speed result), fast starts the moment the site opens on your screen and produces a result in 5-7 seconds.

Free, the way we like it.

Sure, you say, but it's only download speed, no ping or upload speed data.

Oh, gee, you're right: where should I send your refund?
