The parable of the gutter

Screen Shot 2018-05-20 at 10.49.53 AM

There are those who think gutters were invented to provide work for those intrepid enough to climb tall ladders and work up high.

Then there are those who believe gutters exist to offer a platform for any number of devices/systems/solutions that purport to be able to keep gutters clear and thus obviate the need for people to perform this task.

I believe gutters have a deeper, more important message: to teach us that, try as we may, we will never, ever, find a person/company advertising themselves as gutter cleaners who:

1) answer their business/mobile phone during working hours (consolation points if phone goes to VM)

2) are capable of giving a definite time/day when they will appear to perform said function

3) actually show up and, failing that, call to reschedule BEFORE the to-be-cancelled appointment

But wait — there's more!

The key insight here — which came only last night, while I pondered why it was that I had to mop up water that puddled on the floor of an upstairs bedroom whose closed windows couldn't withstand seepage from the branch-and-leaf-clogged overflowing second story gutter just above, which I had hoped would have been addressed early last week BEFORE it rained for days, since I had texted the guy whom I last used last year the week before it rained and he'd replied that he would set up a day and time to come by and then went silent — is that gutters are like life.

Both slap you down from time to time and the sooner we realize that such things cannot be controlled but only responded to, the better able we will be to roll with the waves and punches.

Headache Relief Wrap

88601_1000x1000

Not hip-hop or fast food.

Just saying.

When I saw the photo up top, I thought for a sec it was from one of those sci-fi shows where corpsicles are kept alive in tanks until they arrive at their extra-galactic trans-wormhole destination.

But I was wrong.

From the website:

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

This head wrap combines gentle compression and therapeutic heat to alleviate pain from stress and tension headaches.

Its two built-in air bladders operate similar to hospital compression boots and use compression intervals to stimulate circulation by helping blood vessels expand and contract.

A warming element provides heat therapy that relaxes tense muscles in the face and head.

The corded remote allows one to select from three levels of compression and power the heating element.

Features and Details:

• Adjustable Velcro fasteners ensure optimal fit

• 15 minute auto shut-off

• Polyester lining

• AC plug
