Earth From Space in Infrared

[Chittagong, Bangladesh, is often flooded with standing water, in turquoise.]

[Joplin, Missouri, on July 2, 2011, soon after a tornado. The damage appears as the purple streak at center.]

Just as dogs can hear sounds inaudible to humans, sensors aboard satellites are able to "'see' what our eyes cannot," write Karen Seto and her coauthor Meredith Reba in their new book, City Unseen: New Visions of an Urban Planet.

[Chongqing, China. Born in the ancient Ba kingdom, Chongqing originated at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers. Geologically, the city is built on red sandstone and shale in a major coal-mining region in China. The three main vertically oriented "grooves" in the image, called anticlines and synclines, are folds in the earth's surface rocks.]

Seto and Reba dove into a trove of largely open access satellite images of cities, then used image processing tools to adjust them and highlight hidden dynamics or patterns that emerge over time.

[Shiraz, Iran. Located in a fertile valley that was historically home to many vineyards. Shiraz was an important medieval Islamic city during the Zand dynasty (1747 BCE-79 CE) and the capital of Iran from 1750 to 1794 CE. The city is located at the base of the Zagros Mountains, where a seasonal river just north of the city flows into Maharlu Lake in the center of the image. The rugged semiarid landscape surrounding the city appears as a grooved and textured landscape in the image.]
