MorphWorld: [The voices of] Taffy Nivert and Kate Pierson

Taffy Nivert (above and just below)

has been here before, in a detailed examination of how John Denver's megahit "Take Me Home, Country Roads" came to be.

Last night, while I was listening to R.E.M.'s "Me in Honey" about a hundred times — can you tell I must really like the song? — I decided to really make an effort to find out who the female singer is on the song behind/beside Michael Stipe, as she's got such a great voice.

And on that song she sounds exactly like Taffy Nivert did singing harmony on "Take Me Home, Country Roads."

I mean, I knew it couldn't possibly be Taffy Nivert, but who was it?

So I told the crack research team to drop everything and find out.

They did.

The answer, obtained on a cached Google page from USA Today in 2001, in an online chat conducted by the paper's "Pop Candy" columnist Whitney Matheson: Kate Pierson (below).

Here's how big my ignorance is: only by further research did I learn that she was one of the B-52s.

How dumb is that, I mean?

Is there anyone else on the planet still able to fog a mirror who doesn't know that?

Anyhow, that explains the big, vibrant voice on "Me in Honey," and of course it's only logical since both R.E.M. and the B-52s hail from Athens, Georgia.

See, my ignorance is great, but not limitless.

Another mystery solved.

Dear People, whats happening right now is I am coming out of Traumatic Brain Injury Amnesia from broken neck and fall down 70' series of rock shelves and every time I remember more I call the person and make sure its real. I remembered " kid past and kid" future from B.S.T and called Stefan Grossman and he remembered it was him and Steve Katz from a song he wrote. Tom Hoskins was around them a lot but Tom " Fang" died just before my accident. Tom was one of the few close friends whose friendship did not center around music even thought we made our living that way. Its a strange feeling but kinda fun as I believe I am going to live through this. I would really like to hear from people who knew Gene Rosenthal and Tom in the 60's and 70' cause most of you all new my birth name and not all the goofy stage names I in particular used. My e-mail is above and I am the cabin in Highland County Virginia. I knew a Tim,Maggie,Lindsay, April the house of the blues and the Alp House and Stone Valley Farm. Drop a remember to me. Thanks Ducky

In that blog before I must have been asleep. I think I will join this blog. I was trying to contact Taffy Nivert who along will Bill Danoff and many others did the first cut of Country Roads,Take Me Home. Taffy wrote it . I was around the Exodes when Bill was running lights and lived close to them on Q street. I was there when they taught the song to John. I think Joe Corey was to. John had hurt his hand. Just thinking back Taffy. Do drop me a line. Dave Nicholson Highland Countryu Virginia. Still playing and making banjos.

It was Kate Pierson...do you know how many years I have wondered whose lovely harmonizing voice that was in "Country Roads..." 1971, in the US Army, pining for home, teary-eyed while listening to that wonderful song...
Thank you so very much for putting a name and a face to that voice.
