Mmmmmm... hard ice cream. Higher butter fat content and less air — as in really good ice cream — means harder ice cream at a given temperature. However, the good stuff doesn't taste as good when it's hard. It needs to be softer before we can taste all that goodness. So, if you don't have the patience to let it thaw a little, nuke it for 5-8 seconds. The secondary benefit is easier scooping, whether you choose a high tech scooper or a lowly soup spoon.
