How to watch a DVD on a Mac laptop on a nuclear submarine

Betterbetter

Just in earlier today from a member of my local Mac users group, the following:

    Invert Laptop Screen?

A Navy friend of mine recently posed this query.... Is there a way to get the screen on an Apple laptop to display upside-down? Apparently when underway on a submarine, it's common practice to strap a DVD player to the bunk above for easier watching. Most portable DVD players will flip the screen to accomodate such usage.

I don't recall ever seeing anything like that in the OS, and some googling didn't turn up any third-party programs. Anybody have any thoughts?

A few hours later this appeared, from another member:

    Invert Laptop Screen?

Googling for "Mac screen rotate" returns the following hit:

"There's a somewhat hidden feature in Mac OS X 10.4 that allows you to rotate any monitor in increments of 90 degrees": http://www.bombaydigital.com/arenared/2005/5/29/2

A few hours later another person chimed in as follows:

    Invert Laptop Screen?

It's on my "Display System Prefs" without having to invoke the option key....

Wonder if it rotates the mouse-movement, too. Can be very confusing having the cursor move contrary to the way you're waggling the mouse.

Hello,

i was looking for a way to rotate my screen by 90° (got a lot of A4 sized pdf to read :/) and even if i have been able to find how in mac so rotate the macbook screen, here is an idea for you:

read the dvd with VLC, and in preferences, video, clic on "Filters" and check "video transformation filter". then a sub-option of "Filters" is "transformation", clic on it and set "transform type" to "Rotate by 180 degrees", save and restart vlc

hope it will help.

uhm, no edit button, i have clic on post too fast :(.

And, of course, this information is all completely useless for people who want to watch a DVD on a Mac laptop on a diesel electric submarine.

FYI, my MacBook Pro 17 inch does not have this option. I tried all combinations of option keys and control keys and such and could not find this option.

You sure can. Open up System Preferences, choose Displays, and under "Rotate," select 180° Not all graphic cards support this, and not having a Mac laptop made in the past four years, I can't test it out, but it works just fine on my Mac mini and my G4 PowerMac.

Joe,

As an old Sea Dog myself, I can understand the desire to do this. If only they had had Mac's back in my days in a Nuclear Submarine. It really brings home to me how much power is now in the hands of the younger generation.

Its also good to now that at least one sailor appreciates Mac's and Apple!

Joe, you didn't rotate that MacBook, you flipped it! It's backwards!
