Diet Coke Plus — They hit the sweet spot

The trouble with diet sodas is they taste like dreck.

So yesterday when I espied, in the beverage aisle of my local Kroger, this new entry in what seems an unending series of permutations of Diet Coke, I didn't think it would be anything different.

Still, even though it's always the same, this time might be different.

Isn't that's what they said about the internet bubble before it burst?

And about every bubble right about then, come to think of it?

On the one hand, there are those who subscribe to the school of "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result."

On the other hand, there's my school, founded by the late, great British comedian Terry-Thomas who remarked, about playing the lottery, "You know you won't win — but you might."

But I digress.

Long story short: Diet Coke Plus tastes quite good, with none of that yucko metallic aftertaste characteristic of its kin.

It's got sort of a soft vanilla thing going on.

According to Wikipedia, "It is sweetened with a blend of aspartame and acesulfame potassium [below],

unlike regular Diet Coke which only contains aspartame."

Better things for better living through chemistry.

I'm sure acesulfame potassium will be shown, in twenty years or so, to cause degenerative encephalopathy, but that shouldn't result in any perceptible change in what appears in this space.

The "Plus" is because "Each 8-ounce serving of Diet Coke Plus provides 15% of the daily value for niacin and vitamins B6 and B12, and 10% for zinc and magnesium."

Diet Coke Plus has just been named the Official Diet Soda of bookofjoe™.

At supermarkets, Seven-11s and gas stations everywhere.

Nice label, too.

Bob Morris, in his "The Age of Dissonance" column in yesterday's New York Times, noted his amusement — and more — on encountering Diet Coke Plus for the first time the other day.

So it is pretty much like the Diet Coke elsewhere in the world?

For some reason, we use the worst ingredients in our diet products. A blend generally takes care of this, but we are still convinced that something is going to give us cancer, just because we fed rats 1000x their body weight over six weeks of purely that stuff and thus making the little meeses sick. Who'd have figured.

This stuff ain't too bad in comparison to Diet Coke either.

Personally, I tried to like them all and the Zero got the closest but it still wasn't the same. Now its just Ice Tea (unsweetened) as my choice of 'diet' soft drinks. Heck, I have a special blend of jalepenio infused rooboos (red) tea that made me never want to try diet again.
