Small Blessing for a Child — by Matt Donovan

Where to begin with what you've never seen? Lemon-throated finches

scuffling the Russian olive? How one path's pollen-heavy heaps of chamisa
lead to a stippled bit of scrap metal inscribing some loved thing's grave?
What, of the endless, sad cache of beauty, will you pitch towards, too?

Nectarine snared in the half-moon's burn, the way this winter sun refracts
from the birdbath to the garden wall & engraves a fleeting shimmer.
Our not-yet, nameless one still at the threshold of this world,

what good can it do for me to describe some one-off pause of mine? Lost
beneath a city years ago, mapless, anonymous, I heard a man bang out
Amazing Grace with a mallet on a saw: in fluorescent light shafting

tiled subway walls, fixed before the exact, useless work of hands
flitting at steel, I found a shrill, wavering Amen. May you find, too,
a scarce so-it-is, but let it be of your own making. May what crams the air

be your precise hammering, your erratic, stumbled-into song.
