5 seconds in a microwave will toast (no pun intended?) any CD-ROM. Besides, it's a lot more fun to watch!

A few years back one of my daughters went thru a Kenny Chesney phase - I sure could have used a good CD destroyer back then.
I am happy to say with unbounded paternal pride that she is fully recovered from her brief descent into country music.

If you really wanted to recover it you could just possibly polish it flat again. Realy the disc should be the other way up so you're scratching the side you write on - which is the backside of the thin layer the laser writes on.
Much cheaper - and more fun - is a few seconds in a microwave.
